The Rime of the Ancient Mariner
[[depart]]
[[about]]The Rime of the Ancient Mariner
based off the poem by samuel taylor coleridge.
revised version of an earlier idea and adapted as a final project.
[[depart]]
you are a mariner.
your ship sets sail and journeys towards the open sea.
in the distance you see a storm appoarching.
the strong winds threten your vessel.
[[flee southward]]
[[continue on the path]]you barely escape the storm but now you find yourself surrounded by ice.
your ship is trapped, locked within the icey mountain labyrinth.
[[watch the emerald glaciers drift past]]you fight the storm.
the sails begin to falter.
[[you close your eyes and brace yourself]]through the mist comes an albatross.
[[feed the albatross]]through the mist comes an albatross.
[[feed the albatross]]you feed the albatross.
the albatross circles the ship and uses its powerful wings to break up the ice.
[[sail through the break in the ice]]after your successful escape, you continue on your voyage.
the albatross follows, flying alongside your ship.
[[shoot the albatross.]]you’ve killed the albatross.
the winds still blows.
[[continue your voyage.]]you’ve sailed into a silent sea.
the wind no longer blows, your sails fall idle.
days past in the unforgiving sun.
you are surrounded by water, yet cannot drink.
[[try to speak.]]you try to speak but no words escape your mouth.
your mouth is too dry, as if it had been filled with soot.
[[gaze at the horizon.]]westward you gaze and on the horizon, you spot a speck that catches your eye.
[[continue watching the speck.]]it draws nearer.
the speck is a ship!
[[a ship on the horizon approaches.]]
you try to tell your crewmates that you are saved,
but no words form in your dry mouth.
[[bite your arm.]]you bite your arm.
the blood from your wound wets your mouth enough to speak.
[[tell your crewmates that you are saved.]]the ship nears and passes between you and the sun.
there is a woman on board with bright red lips and golden hair.
she is the only crew and through her ribs the fiery sunset shines.
[[look closer.]]
you peer more closely at the ghostly ship and see Death standing beside her.
she is a nightmare, Life-in-Death.
[[run.]]
[[accept fate.]]
you run to the side of the ship only to realize that you are trapped.
the two begin throwing dice.
“I’ve won! I’ve won!”, she chants as her ghostly ship closes parallel to yours.
[[brace yourself.]]
one by one your crewmen drop, as fast as the albatross.
200 men die without so much as a groan.
you are helpless as they fall, unable to save them, unable to move.
[[...]]you run to the side of the ship only to realize that you are trapped.
the two begin throwing dice.
“I’ve won! I’ve won!”, he chants as her ghostly ship closes parallel to yours.
[[brace yourself.|depart]]
you have survived. death has spared you to live amongst the bodies of your crew.
[[pray.]]
you try to pray but a terrifying whisper leaves you breathless.
[[close your eyes.]]you close your eyes so you can no longer see the cursed eyes of the dead crew who look only to you.
Seven days pass and yet you are unable to die.
[[....]]
the moon rises again, and in the shadow of your ship, snakes dance in the water.
you find yourself able to pray.
the albatross falls from your neck and into the sea.
[[sleep.]]you sleep and dream of water to quench your thirst.
when you awaken, it rains and you are able to drink again
[[drink.]]a violent storm breaks out overhead as you drink.
you hear a fierce wind that never hits the sails.
the ship begins to move.
[[look to the deck.]]you look to the deck and you see your crew reanimate.
the dead men groan and stand.
with dead eyes, they begin working on the ship.
without wind, the helmsmen steers the ship.
the ghastly crew sets sail.
[[help the crew]] or [[look away.]]you pull on a rope with a member of the dead crew.
they say nothing.
[[continue in the silence.]]you begin to feel heavy, your bones shudder.
your body is dragged down into the depth of the slimy sea.
[[you grasp for air as you're dragged down]]you've fainted.
[[wake up.]]
the ship is sailing in gentle weather when you wake.
the dead men still look silently towards you.
[[look out to sea.]]you look out at the ocean and spot a lighthouse.
it is your harbour.
[[turn back towards your crew.]]you turn to face the deck once more and see the dead have fallen to the ground.
in their place stands figures made of light.
one for each of the dead.
[[wave at them.]]each figure waves to you.
the sound of a small boat approaches.
on it sails the Pilot and his son along with a Hermit.
the boat reaches you just as your ship begins to sink.
[[go with the Pilot.]]you find yourself on the pilot’s boat.
[[pick up the oars and begin rowing.]]“so, the Devil knows how to row?”, says the Hermit.
you reach land and step upon it.
[[beg the Hermit for forgiveness.]]he tells you that the only way to be rid of this dread is to tell your tale.
[[tell the tale of your journey.|depart]]seven days and seven nights pass.
you want to die.
you want to die.
[[you want to die.]]the snakes part as the moon shines through the clouds.
how much more will you have to endure.
[[the albatross falls from your neck.]]
